Super Mario Bros. was created in 1985. This was a major advancement in video games when this hit the market. The concept was great and even now kids are enjoying the original version of Super Mario. The most recent game I purchased was Mario Maker for my son. This is a great game because not only can you build your own worlds and play them, but you can also use 4 different versions of Mario to play your course. Mario cart is also a great game that has grown with the advancement of technology. I’m sure everyone remembers the Super Mario Bros cartoon, and the live version of Mario and Luigi and the frequent visits from Sgt Slaughter. Not only the video games, but the merchandising from clothing, Halloween costumes, to toys, this has been a major staple in the American culture and many others around the world.

In 1985 I was 10 years old and there was disadvantages and advantages of having 2 older siblings and having 2 younger siblings. I often had to get clothes that had been through a couple brothers and maybe a cousin or two and most of my toys and what few belongings I had where shared, taken, broken, or put out in the garbage. We didn’t have a Nintendo in 1985, but the local grocery store rented the system out. Now the one good thing about having 2 older brothers was they had jobs, and they liked Mario as well. So they would rent the NES from the local store and play it all day during the summer. Oh but they had to go to work at some point and when they did there it was, the golden toy of the 80’s, mine to play and only to be disturbed by the younger ones. It was glorious hours of play time there on the little 8 inch TV that the kids could use. Over the years all the other Mario games have probably added up to be perhaps some serious waist of time, but good clean fun to say the least.

There have been many sprout offs of Super Mario including Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Galaxy, Captain Toad, Yoshi Island, and the list goes on. Who would have thought the creation of this crazy little plumber who smashes bricks with his head and fights of Turtles and Goombas, would grow to be one of the worlds most popular characters.

Are you a fan of Super Mario Brothers? Sound off  after the JUMP!
